The study of typhoons and their forecasting was of the greatest importance, and MacKeown details the earliest studies of storms in the China Sea.

P. Kevin MacKeown, a graduate of the University College Dublin and the University of Durham, spent the bulk of his career teaching博客來網路書店 physics and studying cosmic radiation at the University of Hong Kong, where he remains as an honorary professor.

美官員讚總統 台美關係比過去堅實

在甘比亞宣布與中國大陸恢復邦交的同時，正展開「久安之旅」的馬英九總統剛好在回國途中過境美國洛杉磯，馬總統在美西時間17日於下榻飯店分別與美國現任重要行政官員以及美國前總統柯林頓通話，廣泛討論台美關係。

據了解，這位重要的行政部門官員在與馬總統通話時，一開始就表示，要代表美國政府感謝馬總統過去8年的領導，使台美關係遠比過去還要堅實(strong)，美方為此表示感激(grateful)，同時，也表達希望繼任的政府能維繫下去。

這名官員還指出，去年11月在新加坡舉行的「馬習會」，不僅增進兩岸關係發展也減少緊張情勢，他認為，馬總統的努力已經為兩岸關係奠定堅實基礎。另一方面，針對總統大選後的政府交接工作，這名人士指出，美方了解目前進度順暢。

另一方面，總統在與柯林頓的通話中，柯林頓稱許馬總統在改善兩岸關係的重要貢獻，讓兩岸能在穩定現狀的基礎上持續互動，柯林頓更以令人驚奇(just amazing)的高度評價讚許馬總統，他還建議馬總統卸任後，應該持續在國際事務上扮演積極角色。

此外，由於柯林頓曾經擔任聯合國駐海地特別大使，負責推動震災後重建，因此，當馬總統說明台灣對海地各項重建協助時，柯林頓十分感激馬總統為海地的貢獻。
